JAMF Software: The Casper Suite and iOS: Mobile Device Management for the Apple platform
We were given the task of setting up 60 iPads for faculty testing and eval, and bought the Casper software. It’s easiest to setup on a Mac, next easiest on Windows, but I put it on a Linux system…super stable, and I had the hardware. This was one of the few times that I can say the software does more than advertised. However, Apple has severe limits on what can be managed with respect to iPad, iPhone, i-etc. The good news is that Casper is one stop shopping to manage all of Apples products (except possibly iPods.) With MacOSX you are supposed to be able to (and based on initial impressions true) manage fairly completely, including imaging.

Oneword.com is a great web tool that allows students to practice a myriad of writing skills, specifically free-writing, and sharing with an online community if they choose to join the site. Users sign in free and see one word at the top of the screen; they have sixty seconds to just write about that one word. Students can choose to add their writing or keep it private, but if they add it, they will see the variety of responses for the one word prompt. Teachers can even use other contributors’ responses as opportunities for revision and editing exercises. The learning opportunities are endless since students could analyze how other writers use different writing traits, such as figurative language, active vs. passive verbs, imagery, punctuation, and more. Oneword.com supports so many different writing mini lessons from grammar to literary elements, to a writer’s voice and diction.

Flubaroo is a free script that you can use grade the quizzes that you administer through Google Docs. Flubaroo provides great step-by-step directions for using the script. I’ll give an quick overview of how it works. First, create your multiple choice quiz using Forms in Google Docs (get directions here). Then take the quiz yourself and have students take the quiz (you can embed it in a webpage or direct students to the URL for your form). Now instead of trying to grade the spreadsheet cells you will insert the Flubaroo script by selecting it from the “insert” menu in your spreadsheet. Once the Flubaroo script is inserted just select it and it will grade the quiz for you.

The app also works great with extremely large presentations or high resolution images and videos. Smart rendering ensures that slides are always at your fingertips when you need them, not a second later. Presentations and videos can be stored locally without the need for an internet connection.
The possibility to set hyperlinks in order to move seamlessly through the slides is excellent for non-linear presentations.

This resource seems to be designed with the IWB in mind. It has an easy “touch” navigation system and it has tabs that allow you to annotate and place various icons on the map. The map elements options also allows you to add various map details including titles, latitude and longitude lines, landmarks, and key labels.
