Over the summer our Moodle was upgraded to 2.5 which means some new features!
We now have badges. These badges can be awarded based on criteria you set within your Moodle, whether this is for completing an activity or getting a certain score. These badges are fully compatible with Mozilla Open Badges.
The default icons used for activities and editing actions have been updated.
Collapsed Editing View
The forms that you use when editing now have a collapsed view so that now the page is not so long. You’ll see the basics at the top, and if you want to access the other editing options you can click the triangles to drop them open.
The “Rich Text Editor” is also collapsed. Just click the “Show editing tools” tab to display all the buttons.
Reports have moved and can now be seen in the newly named Administration block, (formerly Settings.)
Drag and Drop Media and Text onto the Course Page
You can now drag an image or some text onto your course page and choose whether to display it embedded in a label or as a clickable resource.
- Attempts reopened: This setting allows the teacher to decide how submissions are reopened. The default is “Never,” in that students may only submit once. However, a teacher can set this to “Manually” and reopen it themselves for the student to resubmit, or to “Automatically until pass.” The student must then keep trying and resubmitting until they get a pass grade.
- Maximum attempts: If a student is allowed to resubmit, this setting will determine how many times they can resubmit before they are no longer allowed to do so. (For example, if a student has to keep trying until they get a pass grade, the teacher might decide that ten attempts is enough even though they have not yet passed!)
- Team Submissions: It is now possible have a group work collaboratively on an assignment and receive a common (or individual) grade.
- Submission Date Extensions: You can set a cut-off date and time beyond which submissions will no longer be accepted. You can also grant extensions for those who miss the deadline.
Templates for Essay Questions
When using the Essay question type in a quiz, you can now set a template which appears in the students’ text editor for scaffolding their response.
Search Enrolled Users
A new Enrolled users search box makes finding users in very large courses much easier.
A free Massive Open Online Course’ (MooC) for Moodle will be available September 1st. Registration opens August 19th. This is an activity-based learning course for teachers new to Moodle.
